Another name for an umbrella is bumbershoot. The first known use of the wrod was circa 1896. Umbrellas, parasols, etc. have been used fro about 4,000 years. Pictures and sculptures from ancient Egypt depict umbfellas which were used for shade.

In 1830 James Smith and Sons opened the first umbrella shop in London. This beautiful old shop is still operating today on New Oxford Street where handsome, quality umbrellas are still hand-crafted today.
